The Architect meets the Craftsman
'Take the intuition of the architect, the spirit of innovation of the good craftsman, the will to test, apply all that to an incredible ancient and modern matter: “stone”. You will succeed in creating wonderful things that, as time goes by, will be part of yourself”. Achille Castiglioni, 1986
Up&Up has produced using marble even when seemingly objects for the house and the garden should be exclusively temporary and made of modern and synthetic materials: at the same time the Company proved that marble could be a privileged material for design and not only a material for sculptors or a support for anachronistic style practices. Walking on a beach you may happen to hold in your hands a smooth shingle stunned by its form that water has molded, by its colors, by its veins that the sun tones down but that a wave makes them be bright again. If moreover, in the background of the sea, you see the marble white Apuan Alps that, in winter time, get mixed with the snows, then the shingle becomes the ring that links the mountain with the sand and we look at it as if it is hanging for a moment in a story that lasts for millenaries … We would like this feeling of being hanging to be instilled in our new plans. We would like to manufacture objects made of marble that could speak about the mountain and the water as well as about the hands of those men who molded them and because of all that we would like them to talk to those who have them in their hands.
